Am I smarter than Amazon?

This is a really good question from Paul Graham:

If your “high end” online store sets off some Javascript effect every time the user touches something, it might be worth asking why Amazon.com doesn’t do this. Is it because Bezos doesn’t know how to sell online, or because he doesn’t have as good programmers as you?
Paul Graham

I just checked, and while the Amazon website does generate a lot of requests, none of the actions that I’ve learned that e-commerce people can use to optimise an online shop seem to generate anything.

That’s kind of embarrassing for me to not have noticed. Though I never worked with the continual optimisation of online shops, I should not have accepted conventional wisdom that easily.

No, I am not smarter than Amazon. But now I am curious as to how they do it.
