The fact that [a society] partook in sins that virtually every society on earth also indulged in is not evidence of permanent moral failure but evidence of the uncivilized and barbaric human condition from which we have emerged. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come, how far we have to go, and importantly, how far we have to fall.
