Aesthetics vs. usability

I am not the only one who thinks the Google app icons are confusing:

Not even aesthetics, but mere uniformity. Managers drive changes like this, not artists.

Violates the 1st principle of effortless seeing (thanks to cog psychologist Anne Treisman): Differences in color & contour pop out; different arrangements of the same colors & contours require effort.

Well, at least I have now committed to muscle memory where the apps I use are on my phone. But I think real designers could have done better than these corporate design decisions.
