The soft bigotry of low expectations

If you don’t expect someone to perform well, you have low expectations of them. If you don’t expect disadvantaged people or minorities to meet the same standard of achievement as most people … and you then claim to do it in order to combat racism, you are a bigot.

Currently, this is what is happening in for example San Diego Unified School District, where turning in your work late or even cheating may no longer affect your grade. And that’s fine, if you believe that it will be beneficial, but as they claim to do it because it combats racism, they are implying that some minorities cannot turn in their work on time and cannot stop cheating. And that is racism.

And there is a fine line somewhere close to this that is the border to the hard bigotry of no expectations.
