I watched Penny Marshall’s “Awakenings” shortly after it was released and the movie has stayed with me ever since. It is a tragic story of the effects on the survivors of an epidemic of encephalitis lethargica that raged from 1915 to 1926, the cause of which is presently unknown.
I know that it is generally accepted that the Spanish Flu epidemic from 1918 to 1920 didn’t cause the disease – the timing is off – but it certainly seems to have exasperated the symptoms and spread.
And know I think about the story again because of COVID-19.
I am still hoping for a vaccine.
