Anyone reading headlines like “Immunity to Covid-19 could be lost in months” must be forgiven for feeling a bit depressed. Fortunately, that is not exactly what the science says.
Or rather, the article refers to a study that show that the antibody count after COVID-19 drops rapidly which is bad news, but only part of the picture. For example, the study did not consider how T-cells will react, as it is simply too soon to know. And T-cells probably stands for the longest-lasting immunity to COVID-19 and a lot of other diseases.
In fact, there seems to be evidence that those that experienced the SARS epidemic almost 2 decades ago already were at least partially protected against COVID-19, a disease similar to SARS.
This bodes well for a possible vaccine and even possibly for herd immunity.
